Marc Jacobs for Vans

Marc Jacobs for Vans

One of the strangest (and at times, cruelest) things about being a fashion journalist is that oftentimes, we're writing about, styling and sifting through thousands of dollars worth of exquisite clothing, accessories and jewelry that—with our meager paychecks and code of ethics—we'd never be able to purchase for ourselves.

A group of articulate have-nots writing and creating for the haves.

But in truth, many of us don't want a closet full of custom-made clothing. I'm not interested in that. I want quality basics and a few great pieces that punctuate my wardrobe. And they normally come from sample sales or vintage racks. Then there are a few pieces for which you scrimp and save.

Which is why I love Marc Jacobs. Even with his mildly affordable Marc by Marc Jacobs line, he continues to do amazing (and inexpensive) collaborations or specialty lines (I've got several of his $25 Stinky Rat shirts).

It made sense that he'd tag-team with Vans— the shoe of choice for his ecclectic, downtown set of fashion followers. Three years in, his latest interpretations of the classic kicks, for Fall '07, are his best yet. And they're only eighty bucks.

My favorite design is a classic wingtip design printed onto a basic white canvas shoe. And what's cooler right now than a pair of simple white sneakers? Nothing.

It's what Thom Browne might wear to the gym. And I'd wear 'em with slacks at the office. Dark denim and a blazer at night. Seersucker shorts on the weekend.
